About Wool
Wool fabrics are natural fabrics made with textile fibers from the coat of sheep. Wool fibers’ exteriors are hydrophobic (repel water) and the interior of the wool fiber is hygroscopic (attracts water) allowing wool the capacity to both resist and absorb moisture. These Fabrics have the capability of retaining up to 35 percent of its weight in moisture or if felted and treated with lanolin wool is water resistant. The process of lanolizing also helps make wool fibers resistant to stains. Other attributes of wool include it’s permeable nature for maximum airflow and it’s natural antibacterial characteristics, which when used as clothing resists the buildup of odor. Wool knitted fabrics are elastic and breathable, allowing for maximum comfort and circulation around your baby’s bum.
At BabeeGreens we use Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified Merino Wool, Upcycled Cashmere and Upcycled Wool for our Diaper Covers, Longies, and Shorties.
Merino is an incredibly soft wool fabric woven from the fibers of Merino sheep. Cashmere is also an exceptionally soft wool fabric made from the fibers of Cashmere goats. Both of these wools are excellent at regulating body temperature, keeping baby cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Air circulation helps prevent diaper rash as well as alleviates the health concerns of trapped heat within a diaper. Knitted wool’s natural elasticity means your baby’s diaper cover will fit well, stretch for a gentle comfortable fit and move with your baby’s every movement.
How to Use Wool Diaper Covers, Longies, and Shorties
Wool covers, wool longies and shorties are a must for heavy daytime and night time wetters. Diaper your baby with an absorbent cloth diaper like our Growing Greens One-Size Diaper. If your baby is a heavy wetter, you may also use diaper Doublers in conjunction with the cloth diaper. Our diaper Doublers are narrow strips of organic cotton or hemp and organic cotton blended fabrics that you place in the center of cloth diaper to add more absorbent layers. Wool covers, longies and shorties are used over a cloth diaper as another layer of protection from diaper leakage. What the wool covers do is repel the liquid so that your diaper will become wet and soaked though evenly, WITHOUT leaking through the wool.
Wool diaper covers, longies, and shorties are easy to care for due to wool’s lack of frequent laundering. The lanolin in the wool combined with the ammonia in urine create it’s own ‘soap’. One way to know if your wool needs laundering (outside of being soiled) is if the urine smell does not go away after airing dry. This means the lanolin has worn thin and has lost most of its waterproofing as well.
