Babee Greens — Frequently Asked Questions
General / About
What makes Babee Greens different from other cloth diaper brands?
We have been making organic cloth diapers since 2002, and every single product is hand-cut and sewn in Asheville, North Carolina. We use exclusively natural fibers (certified organic cotton, hemp-cotton blends, and Oeko-Tex 100 certified merino wool) and never use synthetic materials.
Do you offer wholesale or retail partnerships?
Yes. We welcome new wholesale accounts and look forward to long-term partnerships. To get started, complete our client information form and credit card authorization form (both available on our Wholesale page), then email them to info@babeegreens.com, or mail or fax them to our Asheville office. Our fax number is (877) 259-1161.
How much money will I save compared to disposables?
Cloth diapers are a larger upfront investment than a pack of disposables, but because they are washable and reusable, they typically pay for themselves over time and cost far less across your baby's diapering years. Our Growing Greens one-size diaper stretches that savings further, since it fits from roughly 5 to 35 lbs and grows with your baby instead of being replaced at each size. Many customers also reuse their stash for a second child.
Where are your products made?
All Babee Greens products are designed and made in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. Every fabric product is hand-cut and sewn locally, which supports regional artisans and keeps our carbon footprint low.
Products & Materials
What materials are used in your diapers and covers?
We use only natural fibers: 100% certified organic cotton (GOTS-certified), an organic cotton and hemp blend, and 100% merino wool (Oeko-Tex 100 certified) for covers. We also offer refashioned cashmere and wool covers. All snaps are hypoallergenic resin (CPSIA-compliant), and elastic is 100% latex-free.
Are your products certified organic?
Yes. Babee Greens' cotton is GOTS-certified organic and milled locally. Our wool is Oeko-Tex 100 certified, which goes beyond the standard organic label by testing for harmful substances at every stage of textile production.
What's the difference between the cotton and hemp-cotton blend diapers?
Both are excellent options. The 100% organic cotton diapers hold their shape reliably with heavy use. The hemp-cotton blend (55% hemp / 45% organic cotton) offers greater absorbency, as hemp is known to be four times more absorbent than cotton alone. It also has natural anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Note that hemp diapers may shrink more noticeably after washing.
What are 'factory seconds' and are they still safe to use?
Factory seconds (also called irregulars) are fully functional products offered at a discounted price due to minor stitching imperfections that are typically difficult to notice. They perform exactly the same as first-quality items.
Are your wool covers truly waterproof?
Wool contains natural lanolin, which creates a water-resistant barrier. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture while remaining breathable and slow to feel damp. When properly lanolized, wool covers are highly effective for overnight use and leak protection. They are not a hard plastic-style waterproof cover, but work through wool's natural properties.
What does 'refashioned' wool and cashmere mean?
Babee Greens sources premium wool and cashmere sweaters and repurposes them into diaper covers and apparel. This upcycling approach reduces waste while producing beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces. Each cover is slightly unique because of the nature of the source materials.
Size & Fit
What weight range do your diapers fit?
The Growing Greens One-Size Fitted Diaper fits babies from approximately 5 to 35 lbs. The Newborn Fitted Diaper fits babies from 5 to 14 lbs. Keep in mind that suggested weight ranges are approximations, and natural fiber shrinkage means fit is not guaranteed.
How does the Growing Greens one-size diaper work from newborn to toddler?
The Growing Greens uses a snap-in contour insert that also serves as a standalone newborn diaper for babies up to 7.5 lbs. As your baby grows, the front folds down to expose a hidden row of snaps for a custom rise fit (10–18 lbs). For toddlers 18–35 lbs, the snap-in contour can be added back for increased absorbency. The elastic waist also helps toddlers pull the diaper up and down during potty training.
Do you have a diaper specifically for newborns?
Yes. Babee Greens makes a dedicated newborn cloth diaper for babies 5 to 14 lbs. The Growing Greens snap-in contour also doubles as a newborn diaper for babies under 7.5 lbs.
My baby is bigger or smaller than average, will these fit?
Sizing is approximate and will vary based on your baby's shape and build, as well as natural fiber shrinkage after washing. Babee Greens recommends trying one diaper before washing the whole batch, since washed items cannot be returned.
Getting Started & Diaper Prep
I've never used cloth diapers before, where do I start?
We recommend pairing a cloth diaper with an outer diaper cover to prevent leaks. Our Growing Greens One-Size Fitted Diaper is a great starting point, as it fits from 5 to 35 lbs and grows with your baby. We also offer curated starter kits that include everything you need to get going. Check out our guide on everything you need to start cloth diapering for more information.
How many diapers do I need to buy?
It depends on your baby's age and how often you do laundry. Newborns and young infants typically need 10–12 diaper changes per day, while toddlers need 6–8. Factor in your laundry frequency when deciding how many to purchase.
What's included in a starter kit?
We have 2 different starter kits to choose from- deluxe and regular.
Our deluxe starter kit includes: 19 Growing Greens One-Size Fitted Cotton OR 8 Hemp/Cotton Diapers, 1 Natural Wool Cover, 2 Packs of Softie Cloth Wipes (12 per pack), 1 Pack of Doublers Liners (6 per pack), 1 Set of Cleansing Greens Spray (8oz), and 2 Pair of Organic Nursing Pads.
Our basic starter kit includes: 13 Growing Greens One-Size Fitted Diapers, 1 Natural Wool Cover, 2 Packs of Softie Cloth Wipes (12 per pack), 1 Pack of Doublers Liners (6 per pack), 1 Set of Cleansing Greens Spray Kit, 2 Pair Organic Nursing Pads.
How do I prepare my diapers and covers once I receive them?
Cotton and hemp-cotton diapers should be washed at least five times in very hot water before first use to strip the natural oils and build absorbency. You only need detergent in one of those five cycles. Diapers become more absorbent with each wash and shrink to size, mostly in length, over the first few washes. Wool and cashmere covers do not need the five-wash prep; instead, lanolize them before first use so they are ready for leak protection. See our guide on how to prep and wash cloth diapers.
Washing & Care
How do I wash cloth diapers?
New diapers should be washed at least five times in hot water before first use (only one of those cycles with detergent). After that, wash in hot water with a fragrance-free, enzyme-free, additive-free detergent. Rinsing thoroughly in hot water is one of the most important steps. Diapers can be tumble dried on hot for 60 to 90 minutes, or line dried, as sunlight also helps sanitize them. Babee Greens recommends our own Washing Greens All Natural Detergent, which is formulated specifically for cloth diapers.
What detergents or additives should I avoid?
Avoid fabric softeners, dryer sheets, bleach, enzymes, optical brighteners, perfumes, and dish soap in your washing machine. Avoid homemade detergents and Soap Nuts. Products that are primarily oxygen cleaners (high in sodium percarbonate or sodium peroxyhydrate) can void the warranty if overused. Babee Greens recommends our own Washing Greens All Natural Detergent, which is formulated specifically for cloth diapers.
My diapers do not smell fresh after washing. What should I do?
After each wash, diapers should smell clean with no hint of urine, ammonia, or other odors. A lingering smell usually means bacteria is still present. Rewash in hot water without detergent and rinse thoroughly. Adding 1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle can help with softness, absorbency, and restoring pH. For persistent buildup, see our guide on stripping cloth diapers.
How do I care for wool covers?
Wool covers do not need to be washed as often as other covers thanks to wool's natural antibacterial and self-cleansing properties. When they do need washing, use Babee Greens Wool Wash, a gentle blend of pure castile soap, organic oils, lanolin, and organic lavender. Always air or line dry wool, never machine dry it. To keep covers leak-resistant, lanolize them periodically (see below).
What is lanolizing and how often should I do it?
To lanolize, dissolve a pea-sized amount of pure lanolin in a cup of very hot water, then add it to a sink of lukewarm water (hot water will felt and shrink wool). Soak the cover for a minimum of 3 hours or overnight. To dry, roll it in a clean towel to remove excess water, then lay flat to air dry. Never wring or squeeze. Lanolize approximately once a month.
Can I put diapers in the dryer?
Yes. Cotton and hemp-cotton diapers can go in the dryer on hot for 60 to 90 minutes, and the heat helps sanitize them. Wool and cashmere covers should always be air or line dried only. Note that boiling will harm the snaps and elastic, and bleach can ruin diapers and irritate your baby's skin.
Leaks & Troubleshooting
My diaper is leaking, what am I doing wrong?
Leaks are not considered a product defect. Common causes include fit issues, insufficient absorbency, or product buildup from detergent residue. We encourage you to call us directly so we can troubleshoot with you and help you find the right setup.
How do I get a good overnight setup with no leaks?
Many customers use a fitted diaper with a lanolized wool cover overnight. Adding a contour or doubler inside the diaper increases absorbency for longer stretches. A wool diaper liner placed directly against the baby's skin can also help baby wake up feeling dry even when the diaper is very wet.
Can I use diaper rash cream with cloth diapers?
Use of diaper rash cream will void the Babee Greens warranty, as creams can build up on fabric and cause leaks or damage. If your baby has skin irritation, contact us for guidance on safe alternatives.
Returns, Warranty, & Policies
What is your return policy?
Unwashed, unused items in new condition may be returned within 30 days for the original purchase price, less a 20% restocking fee. For newborn items, the return window may be extended by 15 days (45 days total). Original shipping costs cannot be refunded, and if an order received free shipping, the original shipping cost will be deducted from the refund. See our full return policy here.
Can I return a diaper I've already washed?
No. Washed items cannot be returned. If you are unsure about sizing, we recommend washing just one item first before washing the entire batch.
What does the warranty cover?
Babee Greens products are warranted against defects in materials or workmanship for 1 year from the date of purchase. Covered defects include loose stitching, holes discovered upon arrival, and broken snaps. Leaking, odor, fit, fading, staining, and normal wear and tear are not covered. The warranty applies to the original purchaser only.
What voids the warranty?
The warranty is voided by the use of bleach, boiling, or dyeing; washing at temperatures above 140°F (60°C); detergents containing enzymes, brighteners, whiteners, dyes, or perfumes; fabric softeners; diaper rash cream; or any caustic substance. Failure to follow the washing instructions also voids the warranty.
